Autophagy comes from Ancient Greek word, which means natural mechanism of cells that recycles dysfunctional cellular components.
Autophagy is a natural mechanism that lets our body cope with starvation.
In every cells of our body there is a thing called lysosome. It is like a garbage disposal that recycles damaged cells in our body, breaks them down with the enzyme and spits them out as free fatty acids and amino acids. Free fatty acids and amino acids are the building blocks to make the body tissue. These are spread to different parts of the body.
Autophagy recycles the damaged cells into new raw materials and made into new cells, regrow new brain cells, nerve cells, regrow new heart cells, protects the immune system.
Imagine you have a garbage disposal in your house that recycles all your garbage and turn it into raw materials that you can use for building new kitchen, new furniture. Isn’t it great?!
Your body will heal from many ailments, you will look young, and you will function more effectively. You think more clearly, you have better memory, and you have more energy.
What cells are recycled in the lysosome?
1. Defective damaged cells
Damaged cells are cells that are worn out
2. Intracellular pathogens (fungus, candida, bacteria, viruses, microbes)
You cannot kill the pathogens that have invaded your body from long time ago. All the viruses, candida, fungus, microbes are inside your body, waiting for your immune system to be weak and then they will attack you. Of course, it will be a good thing to get rid of these pathogens. One way to get them out is to activate your autophagy. It recycles them into raw materials and used as fuel.
Autophagy can do this. It recycles fungus, candida, bacteria, viruses, microbes into fuel and raw materials to build new cells.
3. Damaged proteins:
Misfolded proteins, oxidized proteins, mutated proteins, glycated proteins.
Different combination of proteins from the food we eat are structured and some are shaped incorrectly. Accumulation of these misfolded proteins
What caused amyloid deposits?
Insulin resistance and foods high in sugar and carbohydrates.
Oxidized proteins are proteins exposed with oxidants like
- Glucose (consuming too much sugar or refined carbohydrates)
- Vegetable oils (mostly are GMO with herbicide): soy, corn,
cotton seed, canola. This can create inflammation in the body and deplete vitamin C, E, and A.
- Iron. Too little iron is not good for you, but excess iron exposed to oxidation is also not good.
- Low anti-oxidants for not eating enough vegetables
Mutated proteins are protein mutations caused by chemicals from the food we eat or from the pollution in the environment we live in. And now with autophagy, these mutated proteins can be recycled.
Sugar and protein combination like barbequed ribs becomes glycated proteins and becomes sticky blood.
There are other types of food that can become AGE (Advanced Glycated End Products). These are the cause of sticky blood and can be very dangerous to your health.
